Study for Horn & Chamber Ensemble
Premiered 1st May 2013 by Bristol University New Music Ensemble (Cond. Richard Barnard) and Benedict Todd (Horn)
The recording here is from rehearsals of a version of this piece for off-stage horn soloist where the horn sound is fed into the piano via an unseen speaker. The acoustic version positions the horn player in the crook of the piano with bell facing the body. The piano resonance activated by the horn sound is the bridge between the worlds of the solo horn and orchestra.
The extract below is two minutes from rehearsals, my thanks to the players for permissions. The extract is of the central section of the score, it moves from the end of a nocturnal cadenza into the andante that eventually closes the piece.
